In the Western world, the emotions such as the feelings of love or hate, joy or fear, pleasure or pain, comfort or discomfort have for many centuries been separated from the other especially the intellectual and cognitive aspects of the mind.

This dichotomy can, in fact, be traced as far back as the Greek philosophers of the first millennium before the Christian era, and especially to Parmenides of Elea in Southern Italy, ca BC. When forced to choose between relying on the information provided by the senses or that supplied by reason, he opted for the superiority of reason. An unshakeable faith in reason as the primary source of our knowledge of the world ie, the philosophy of rationalism has pervaded the Western world since then.

Many modern psychologists eg Jean Piaget regard intelligence as being relatively independent of emotion or affect, and even Sigmund Freud, while fully aware of the part that emotions play in the formation of human personality, considered them to be separate from and even antagonistic to intelligence. Greenspan is a practising child psychiatrist and a clinical professor at George Washington University Medical School.

He has authored and co-authored nine other books, and co-edited two more. Benderly is a specialised journalist with several books to her credit. She and Greenspan have received national awards for their work. Greenspan's thesis in this highly readable and scholarly book is that the emotional experiences associated with physical sensations during infancy and early childhood supply the groundwork that is common to intelligence, morality, empathy and the sense of self.

These early experiences that are founded on physical sensations derived from the environment of which a large part is the primary care-giver and the responses elicited by them in the infant or young child are the basic determinants that shape and direct the development of a child's mind and intelligence.

They are, in fact, critical to the creation, organisation and co-ordination of many if not all of the important functions of mind. Thus the capacity for, and even the processes involved in, the attainment of rationality are intimately connected to, and influenced by, physical sensation and by emotion, immunology a short course pdf free download. An idea that is fundamental to this thesis is that every sensation registered by human beings gives rise simultaneously to a physical and an emotional effect.

Since sensory impressions are in this way automatically tied to feeling, the associated emotions are instrumental in the organisation of the intellectual capacities and in creation of a child's sense of self, its behavior and its cognitive processes or intelligence. The Growth of the Mind is based on the results of Greenspan's clinical work on very young children who showed signs of autism, on infants and young children who developed relatively normally and on children in multiproblem families.

Being the result of clinical experience, it is not surprising that the neuroanatomical, molecular or biochemical mechanisms involved are not explored at all. This makes the book easily accessible to the general reading public at whom the nine chapters that constitute the second part are especially directed, ie, those that immunology a short course pdf free download with the 'endangered origins of intelligence' of the title.

By contrast, the first six chapters forming the first part concern the processes that build the mind, with three chapters here being devoted to description of the six levels in the develop- 93 ment of the mind that Greenspan derives from his clinical observations. The Growth of the Mind is of interest to educators because of its explorations of, and insights into, the emotional component of all sensation derived from the environment.

At the tertiary level of education, especially in the sciences including Biochemistrythis component is usually largely ignored. The focus tends to be much more on the ability to organise, analyse and sequence ideas than on those aspects of thinking especially the creative thinking so necessary for problem solving that are emotionally based.

This focus is constantly modelled and reinforced through the one-directional presentation of material in lectures alas, still the dominant mode of teaching and the rote memorisation of much if not all of that material that is so very frequently the response of students. Two-way communication between teacher and student is fundamental for the interactions essential for participatory, dynamic and effective learning, since it involves feelings as well as the intellectual aspects of the mind.

Given the increasingly impersonal and alienating nature of our world this is especially true in the realm of higher-level education the warnings sounded by Greenspan deserve to be taken seriously, immunology a short course pdf free download.

Wiley-Liss, New York. New textbooks are therefore always of interest. This is the third edition of Immunology A Immunology a short course pdf free download Course and, having read it, I now regret that I am unfamiliar with the first two editions. I am unable to comment on changes from these editions, although the authors state that each chapter has been either updated or re-written immunology a short course pdf free download 'incorporate new findings and to delete information that no longer reflects current thinking'.

I am not entirely convinced that a book of 22 chapters and pages necessarily qualifies to be called 'a short course'; nonetheless,! The authors have taken the maxim that 'less is more', and they have given in each chapter what could be described as 'just enough': thus their avowed intention is not to overburden the student new to immunology with an overwhelming amount of information which can demotivate the student and perhaps render the subject inaccessible to the less than strong-hearted students, immunology a short course pdf free download.

The authors succeed very well in their intentions. There is an excellent Introductory chapter which manages to incorporate an overview, introducing terminology immunology a short course pdf free download immunological ideas in an historical context whilst also looking at the benefits of immunology and predicting future interests.

There are a number of fairly conventional chapters, for example those devoted to antibody structure and complement. Others are less so, for example a chapter each devoted to the Biology of the B lymphocyte and T lymphocyte. Even immunology a short course pdf free download more conventional chapters have some interesting snippets of information which might be buried, or even omitted from other mainstream immunology books at this level: for example, in the chapter on antibodies, the significance of the half lives of different classes and subclasses is discussed rather than just giving the data in a conventional table.

There is a separate chapter on the activation of small lymphocytes by antigen, while the chapter on control mechanisms incorporates a whole host of influences including age, nutritional state, tolerance, MHC, cytokines, idiotypic networks and immunosuppression. Clinical aspects of immunology are detailed in nine chapters and include the expected: hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, transplantation, immunology a short course pdf free download, immunodeficiency, as well as tumour immunology and transfusion immunology.

The final chapter takes us back to where modern immunology began, with immunisation, and discusses modern approaches to vaccination and immunotherapy, though, oddly, does not appear to mention DNA vaccines as opposed to recombinant vaccines. The answer to the question of whether the approach works must be a resounding 'yes'. Each chapter is very well written in a very accessible style.

Deciding what to leave out, or how far to go with explanations must have been very difficult, but each chapter comes with a number of excellent references for further reading, mostly from review articles. The book gives the distinct impression that the authors know their students, and it seems to me that they also know mine.

Neither is the text overloaded with 'busy' diagrams which can often be a distraction, no matter how attractive they make the book appear. Each chapter ends with a set of 'multiple choice' review questions, followed by answers and explanations. I have very few criticisms: some inconsistencies in the early chapters over the distinction between antigens and immunogens; no mention of DNA vaccines. However, these are far outweighed by a book which is well written, succinct, yet contains enough of the right information to stimulate the minds of those new to immunology.

It has been a pleasure to read. Blackwell Science, Oxford, immunology a short course pdf free download. This is extremely important if we are to understand and, if necessary manipulate, the inheritance of particular traits. For instance, immunology a short course pdf free download, if the fetus carries genes for important inherited disorders, management of the disease becomes that much easier if we have a knowledge of the genetic basis of the disorder.

To produce a map for each human chromosome, immunology a short course pdf free download, contiguous clone maps contigs are generated by digesting the clones with restriction endonucleases.

The sizes of restriction fragments generated for each clone are entered into a computer, which then compares the sizes of the fragments from all analysed clones to determine which clones share common restriction sites because they partially overlap.

The clones are then placed in order according to the overlapping regions. This elegant book with six chapters describes pictorally the various aspects of genome analysis.

After briefly explaining the rationale for mapping and sequencing genomes, it gives a list of organisms whose genomes are being sequenced. The reader also learns of the 5-year goal of the human genome project, immunology a short course pdf free download. Detailed structure of genomes with basic aspects of genome size, organization and sequence complexity are covered in the second chapter.

Fragmentation of DNA using restriction enzymes, isolation of chromosomes and chromosome microdissection form the contents of the third chapter. Assembling the fragments in the same linear order as found in the chromosomes from which they are derived, methods of fragmentation of DNA with restriction endonucleases, separating large fragments of DNA, isolation of chromosomes and the use of vectors are also covered in this chapter.

Assembling a physical map of the genome, ie the process of putting the fragments back together again are covered in the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter gives the methods to sequence DNA, strategies, analysis of sequence data and maintenance of databases. The last chapter explains how mapping and sequencing can be used to isolate genes corresponding to traits of interest and to determine gene function. The author has done a good job in providing a large number of the latest references in the field.

Clinical researchers and experimental geneticists will find this book very useful. That book also included answers and explanations to the questions posed on those problems, references to the pertinent literature, and an index.

Immunology a short course pdf free download present volume consists of new problems presented in the same format and intended to be used in the same way. Most of the problem vignettes are in the area of molecular biology and involve some relatively common and many relatively rare diseases. A glance at the detailed index quickly reveals this. Inclusion of rare diseases is to be commended as they open up new areas of knowledge that are likely to become commonplace before very immunology a short course pdf free download. Such diseases also demonstrate very clearly how the principles and methods of molecular biology eg cloning and sequencing of DNA; expression of genes in cultured cells; influences of the likely effects of amino acid substitution, or other abnormalities of the primary struc- immunology a short course pdf free download.
